BLACK MIST DIFFUSION

OVERVIEW

Black Mist filters reduce contrast without reducing resolution. You can still read the text at the bottom. Shadows stay dark and rich black tones.

Reduce in contrast means smoother details. Notice how some of the brushstrokes look more blended now?

Blooming of the highlights. The increase in Mist strength makes the sunlight leak onto the wall in a foggy, misty, haze. This is the main look from mist diffusion filters. Now why, would we want that look? Details to follow.

Black Mist Diffusion filters come in different strengths. The larger the fraction (closer to 1 whole number) the stronger the filtration and effect.

1/8 is the weakest. Typically a filter you can keep on for an entire shoot day. Safe for 16mm-135mm.

1/4 is double the strength. Good for 24mm-85mm range. Very intensified look.

1/2 - very strong, dreamy, hazy effect. Not recommended for everyday use.

1- Ok, now you’re getting out of control. You have a Black mist addiction. Just stop.

I recommend getting the largest diameter Black Mist Diffusion filters you can afford, then use a set of step up rings to be able to use the same 82mm filter on all of your lenses. I also recommend getting some BRASS step up rings because they tend to stick less than cheap aluminum rings.

VAXIS versus K&F CONCEPT

How do these K&F Concept filters compare to my trusty Vaxis VFX filters?

The Vaxis filters have been my GO-TO filters for quite a while, but they do require the use of the Tilta Mirage Matte box to be able to use the $59n circular VFX filters. Otherwise, they sell rectangle filters for $300, but you still have to own a standard matte box to be able to use those. But we are going to compare those Vaxis filters against the K&F concept filters anyways!!

VAXIS vs K&F CONCEPT

Both are great options for this scenario. Hard to spot the difference?

BLACK DIFFUSION FILTERS are the BEST BEAUTY FILTERS!

Black Mist filters are my favorite beauty filter. The reduce in contrast and detail means it decreases the detail in blemishes, wrinkles, freckles, and smooths out the skin tone with a gradual rolloff.

Although be careful with brightly lit background because the halation can bloom into the subjects face, as shown below. The skin looks like, but there is a Green glow on the side of my face, and hazy blue fog creeping in on the left side.

COLOR CASTING - WHITE BALANCE CARD

All of the filters did great, and only needed a few very slight adjustments to get a perfect white balance in Adobe Premiere.

WB Correction= -1.3 Blue, -0.9 Green (MEANS slightly Warm and Magenta)

Vaxis:

WB Correction= 0, -1.8 Green (MEANS slightly more Magenta)

Tiffen:

WB Correction= -1.3 Blue, -0.9 Green (MEANS slightly Warm and Magenta)

WATER DROPS - GLASS COATINGS TEST

I like the coatings on the KF CONCEPT better. The Tiffen just has the water splat and lay flat, whereas on the KF, it beads up and repels better.
